National Donate Life Month features an entire month of activities to help encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors and to honor those that have saved lives through the gift of donation.
Why should someone register?
More than 100,000 people are waiting for a life saving transplant at any given time.
Another person is added to the waiting list every 10 minutes.
Twenty people die each day because the organ they need is not donated in time.
One organ, eye and tissue donor can save and heal more than 75 lives!
Now that you know the statistics let me share my real life story with you. In October of 2016 my mother who was 56 at the time went into heart failure. She had been maintaining heart disease for years, but it suddenly declined fast. By December we knew she would need a heart transplant to ever be able to see the new year. Our hearts were broken and scared beyond measure. She was placed on the transplant list on December 22nd and sent home with a life vest and an IV pump to continuously circulate medication through her heart to keep it pumping. We were going home and hopeful we would make it through Christmas with the new medication. We received a phone call at 4am on December 24th telling us to make our way to the hospital because they had a heart that had just become available. With very saddened hearts for the family who had just lost their loved one we were hopeful and so very grateful that our mother would be receiving the ultimate gift, the gift of life. Had that person not registered to become an organ donor my mother would not be with us today. That has become a day that we will never forget and never take for granted. Now we celebrate my mother birthday, my parent’s anniversary, Christmas Eve, and “New Heart Day” all on the same day.
